Death Doula, Grief Support, & Aging Expertise:

Hayl (like hail) is a certified Death Doula and Grief Support Specialist, contracted by individuals, families, and  community, and state-based organizations to offer support services and education across the state of Iowa.  She provides death doula services,  grief and loss counseling, aging in-place services, and education programs, workshops, and seminars.

Education:

Hayl is exceptionally qualified to provide services at GLADYS. Having worked in human services for many years, Hayl was inspired to pursue her passion for understanding how trauma, conflict, grief, and loss impact our lifespan and development. She began focusing her education on gerontology with specialization in memory support, mental health, grief, and loss and this lead her to earn a Master of Science (MS) degree in Gerontology from Kansas State University and a graduate certificate in Conflict Resolution. Hayl also holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Psychology from Drake University and, an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Animal Science. Additionally, she holds a professional certificate as a Grief Support Specialist (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and has a certificate in End-of-Life Care from Des Moines Area Community College.

Additional qualifications include:

- member of the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA)

- member of the International End-of-Life Doula Alliance (INELDA)

- Certified in Mental Health First Aid

- Certified in Psychological First Aid

Previous certifications include: Certified Nursing Assistant & Registered Behavior Technician

Animal Assisted Interventions:

As a certified therapy canine team and certified crisis response team, she and her dogs partner to provide services and support at GLADYS in addition to hospice and palliative care programs, memory support and skilled nursing facilities, crisis response and intervention services, educational settings, victim support and advocacy programs, community and state-based organizations, and mental health practices. Hayl is a Certified Animal Assisted Intervention Specialist (C-AAIS) through the Association of Animal Assisted Intervention Professionals (AAAIP) and is the first in her state (Iowa) to earn this credential. For AAAIP, she serves as a Subject Matter Expert and on the Certification Commission. She is the Chapter Leader of Pet Partners of Greater Des Moines, a Community Partner (Pet Partners).
